Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Brooklyn, New York. Sanborn Map Company, Vol. 7, 1951. Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress (035.01.00)

In the Neighborhood

Insurance companies used Sanborn maps to determine a property’s fire liability, but the maps also provide a detailed view of community organization and how baseball has fit—quite literally—into city life. This map depicts Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1913 to 1957. It is crammed into four-and-a-half acres neighboring the Department of Sanitation, a United Parcel Service distribution center, and a venetian blind manufacturer. A few years after the Dodgers relocated to Los Angeles, the stadium was demolished to make way for a high-rise apartment complex.
