Morris Brown Ball Club

Little is known about the Morris Brown College baseball team that played at the turn of the twentieth century. The Georgia college was founded by African Americans for black students. Sociology professor W. E. B. DuBois, of nearby Atlanta University, and attorney Thomas Calloway selected this image as part of a portfolio documenting the accomplishments of black Americans following Emancipation. The series of photographs formed part of the American Negro Exhibit at the Paris Exposition held in 1900.
