The Jackie Robinson Story

In an unusual bit of casting, Jackie Robinson played himself in his own biopic, The Jackie Robinson Story (1950), a low-budget film quickly shot before spring training. Sportswriter Arthur Mann’s episodic screenplay scampers through Robinson’s eventful life in just seventy-six minutes. This copy of the script bears the signatures of Robinson and co-star Ruby Dee, along with Mann’s drawings of Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey (top) and coach Clyde Sukeforth, whose characters challenge Robinson in the film’s most dramatic scene.
