Positive Portrayals of African Americans in Comics
Positive Portrayals of African Americans in Comics
Following the publication of All Negro Comics in 1947, there were very few positive representations of African Americans in comic books until the Black Panther debuted in 1966 in the Fantastic Four. Originally published as a three-issue series in 1950, Negro Romance followed in the trend of romance comics but was specifically published for black readers, and included stories of college sweethearts, betrayal and heartache, and ultimately, love.
