Inspiration from Real Family Life

When Canadian cartoonist Lynn Johnston began her comic chronicle of the Patterson family in 1979, she drew upon her own life. In this strip, when John takes Michael, along with his son’s coach and teammates, out for root beer after losing the hockey tournament, Michael tells his father he values the game’s camaraderie more than winning. Embracing the ups and downs of family life, Johnston’s stories have captivated readers worldwide for decades. Though she retired in 2008, her comic is still published in reruns.
