Exhibition Drawn to Purpose

Elizabeth Shippen Green (1871–1954). Once More the Herald Set the Trumpet to His Lips and Blew, 1911. Published in Richard Le Gallienne "Tapestries of Twilight," Harper's Magazine, May 1911. Oil and watercolor. Cabinet of American Illustration, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress (003.01.00)

From the Storied Past

In this imagined scene set in the past, Elizabeth Shippen Green uses a low vantage point to heighten the visual impact of men on horseback boldly silhouetted against a colorful sky. The dramatic effect she achieves attests to Green's skillful focus on key narrative moments. Unlike many female peers limited to illustrating children's literature, Green was awarded a contract by Harper's to illustrate a wide variety of stories.
