Female Take on Family Life

Lynn Johnston carefully sequences interaction between her main character's children and an elderly neighbor in this well-realized strip that references such themes as the constant challenge of motherhood, neighborliness, loneliness, and compassion toward the old. The scope of her themes and her engaging characters who age in real time are key aspects that won her comic a huge, devoted readership. Johnston's strip projects a mature female point of view, that of mother and wife.
