A Global Concern

When Anita Kunz created this evocative painting to accompany an article about the global AIDS epidemic, effective multi-drug therapy was about to become available. Since Kunz's image appeared, death rates from the disease have declined markedly in this country but remain concerning worldwide. Multiple meanings can be inferred from the cluster of hands, which underscores the point that the disease afflicts people of all races and ages. The miraculous light signals hope for future cures.
