Exhibition Drawn to Purpose

Marge Henderson Buell (1904–1993). Little Lulu, 1942. Published in The Saturday Evening Post, September 12, 1942. Ink and watercolor over graphite underdrawing. Gift/purchase, 2001. Art Wood Collection of Caricature and Cartoon, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress (009.00.00)

Snagging the lollipop intended for her friend, Little Lulu displays her resourcefulness in getting the better of her male playmates. Marge Henderson Buell debuted her comic in 1935 in the Saturday Evening Post, where it became a hit and ran until 1944. She eventually delegated writing and drawing to other cartoonists but maintained rights to her creation for many years, capitalizing on Lulu's popularity by developing an array of products and projects.
