Exhibition Art in Action: Herblock and Fellow Artists Respond to Their Times

Tony Auth (1942–2014). Herblock painting McCarthy, Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton, ca. 2000. Ink and porous point pen. Gift of the artist, 2000. Tony Auth Archive, Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress (004.00.00)

An Independent Spirit

In this sprightly tribute to Herblock, Tony Auth, a distinguished editorial cartoonist in his own right, celebrates the strong independence his friend and colleague exercised throughout his career. Auth pictures Herblock taking aim at both Democrats and Republicans in this scene. Caricature portraits of Joseph McCarthy, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton humorously suggest the vulnerability of each politician by depicting them nude. Auth also includes a profile of Franklin Roosevelt on the far left.
