BAIN NEWS SERVICE. Duke Kahanamoku. 1910–1915

Duke Kahanamoku helped popularize surfing, won five Olympic medals over twenty years, and acted in fourteen Hollywood movies, most famously Mister Roberts. Regarded as one of the greatest swimmers of his time, he revolutionized swimming, introducing the flutter kick that he developed in his native Hawaii. For more than twenty years, Duke served as sheriff of the City and County of Honolulu and acted as Honolulu’s unofficial greeter. In 1966, Mr. Kahanamoku taught the visiting Queen Mother Elizabeth of Great Britain how to do the hula.
