In the summer of 1899, railroad magnate Edward H. Harriman organized a scientific expedition to explore and document the Alaskan coast. In addition to the Harriman family, the expedition included a host of scientific, literary, and artistic luminaries, including the photographer Edward Curtis, who photographed Alaskan landscapes, Native Americans, and the activities of other members of the expedition.
