POSSIBLY BY EMMA J. FARNSWORTH. Untitled. 1890–1910

This image was acquired by photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, who collected, exhibited, and advocated work by women photographers. In her 1897 article for Ladies Home Journal, “What A Woman Can Do With A Camera,” she wrote, “Learn early the immense difference between the photography that is merely a photograph, and that which is also a picture.” She organized an exhibition and lectured on art photos by women for the International Congress of Photography, held in Paris in 1900. The exhibition included the work of Pictorialist photographers Gertrude Käsebier and Emma J. Farnsworth.
