National Congress of American Indians

Founded in 1944 by representatives from fifty Native American tribes and tribal associations, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) adopted a mission to secure Native American sovereign rights, to protect cultural property and religious rights, to seek beneficial services and programs, and to educate the public about American Indian peoples and interests. Today, NCAI continues to support an extremely broad range of charities, policy innovation, advocacy and cooperation among tribal governments, as well as youth activities and cultural events, such as the poetry readings promoted in this program.
