Childhood Encounter

Sylvester Edwards, a supporter of the fiery Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey, taught his granddaughter Rosa “never to accept mistreatment.” In this autobiographical sketch Rosa describes a childhood encounter with a white boy named Franklin who threatened to hit her. She picked up a brick and dared him to try, revealing the feistiness that would incite her famous 1955 bus stand. Franklin retreated.
