Exhibition Rosa Parks: In Her Own Words

Galatas to Rosa McCauley, April 3, 1929. Autograph letter. Rosa Parks Papers, Manuscript Division, Library of Congress (011.00.00)

Letter from a Classmate

Rosa Parks was already reading when she began school in Pine Level, Alabama. Moving to Montgomery at age eleven, she attended Miss White’s Montgomery Industrial School for Girls and, later, high school at Alabama State Teachers College. In this letter Galatas, a former classmate who moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, praises Rosa for being “very smart,” discusses mutual friends, and teases her about boys.
