1955 Income Tax Return

On this 1955 Income Tax Return form Raymond and Rosa Parks reported their gross income as $3,749. 94. The couple’s income was well below the U.S. median income of around $5,000. On January 7, 1956, Rosa was discharged from the Montgomery Fair department store, where she had worked as a tailor’s assistant in men’s alterations since September 1954. Raymond was forced to resign his job as a barber at Maxwell Air Force Base.
