Polish American poet Czeslaw Milosz famously said, “Language is the only homeland.” (Język jest jedyną ojczyzną.) For many displaced from their ancestral, childhood, or chosen homes, language and memories of place make it possible to remember a past homeland while joining or creating a new community.
Personal possessions, family photographs, and cultural traditions can provide a link back to a homeland left behind. These objects pose the question: what would you hold on to if you could never return to the home you knew?
