Recording and Retelling

The objects on display here show how memory is recalled, retold, and recast. Memoirs, records, and histories are each made for a particular audience. Additionally, recollections by participants in the same event sometimes have striking differences.

We may never know if the recordings on the “golden record” reach the intended interstellar audience or their reaction to it. For those on earth, however, its sounds and images record and share a snapshot of humanity.
