Germany went to war with the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, easing the pressure on the British and giving them renewed hope. In October 1941, Averell Harriman noted Churchill's opinion that "Hitler's revised plan undoubtedly is now, Poland '39, France '40, Russia '41, England '42, '43 (?) -- maybe America."
