The Children of the Poor

I saw the street overrun with children
who should have been in school, but
there was no room for them there.
I saw the street and the gutter ruin
the boys and fashion the gang, for
there was no playground and no
boys’ club.
I saw the home wrecked in the tenement
setting, where the Tenement House Commission
declared that “all the influences
made for unrighteousness,” and for the
corruption of the young.
