MAY 4, 1865

President Lincoln’s funeral procession wound its way from the State House through Springfield to Oak Ridge Cemetery. There, in a specially built tomb, the coffin was placed on a marble slab. Little Willie Lincoln’s coffin was placed next to the one holding his father's body. After an eloquent oration and benediction, the tomb’s heavy wooden doors and iron gates were shut. A mournful nation bid a final farewell to its martyred president.
