A elderly Viennese surgeon and his daughter, fleeing the Nazis, settle in the U.S. in a small dust bowl community, which is succumbing to the ravages of the drought. When the entire community decides to relocate to Oregon, the surgeon and his daughter follow, no longer refugees, but pioneers.
