FLICC Reference Institute
Reference Skills for the
21st Century
Rescheduled from an earlier date!
See a preliminary agenda below.
This three-day institute analyzes how traditional library reference skills work in a constantly changing
information services environment. How can reference librarians bring existing skillsreference interviewing,
collection development, bibliographic instructioninto an environment where Web resources, online services, CD-ROMs,
and other resources proliferate alongside traditional print and microform materials? Designed for new reference
librarians, seasoned reference librarians, and heads of reference, the institute will tackle the thorny issues facing today's
reference librarian: conducting the reference interview via email, developing collections in a Web environment, providing
non-traditional reference services, developing strategies and techniques for effective user education,
maintaining bibliographic control of electronic resources, authenticating and archiving of electronic publications, and
evaluating reference services.
