FLICC Personnel Working Group Meeting Minutes
February 1998
The February 18, 1998 meeting of the Personnel Work Group was called to order at 9:30 A.M. in the FLICC Headquarters. Jewel Player, Yvonne Washington-Woods, Suzanne Grefsheim, Tad Downing, Susan M. Tarr, and Kathy Eighmey attended.
Discussions concerned the following:
1. Military librarians and the MLS
Background information suggests that, in practice, if not policy, military librarians possess the MLS degree. Jewel Player will draft a model letter to advise Steve Perloff of this prevailing practice within the military services and that further advises Mr. Perloff that small post libraries maybe headed by people who are classified within the 1411 (library technician) series.
2. Letter to Steve Perloff on qualification standards
Further changes were suggested to the draft letter to Steve Perloff. Changes were noted and, after several post meeting emails, a final signed letter to Mr. Perloff was prepared for transmittal.
3. Sue Perella
By 100% popular acclamation, it was agreed that Sue Perella will remain part of the Personnel Working Group, even in her retirement.
4. Course of future work
It was agreed that we would use PDs and KSAs taken from vacancy announcements to produce lists of quality KSAs by categories of librarians. These listings should be posted at the FLICC website as resources for developing KSAs in vacancy announcements. Suzanne
Grefsheim will bring information relating to KSAs for public services librarians to our March 17th meeting.
5. Action item:
Susan Tarr will look into drafting a letter (pending Steve Perloff's response to our letter) to the U.S. Department of Labor to recommend changing the language of contracts by defining the term "librarian" to assure that only ALA accredited librarians are hired.
6. Next meeting:
Our next meeting is scheduled for March 17, 1998 at 9:30 A.M. in the offices of FLICC.
