The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories
Berea [KY] community collectionRepository: Berea College. Special Collections & Archives
Collection Description (Extant): This collection consists of official Berea City records, correspondence, photographs and oral history materials documenting the town of Berea, Kentucky. A section of the oral history component consists of 12 interviews conducted in 2001 under the leadership of Sociology professor Dr. Jacqueline Burnside. These interviews include twelve citizens of the town of Berea and their memories of participating in various ways in the Civil Rights Movement. The content of the interviews primarily documents attitudes about race and participation in local civil rights efforts. There are 12 interviews in all (14 cassettes and 2 vhs) and all of them have typed transcripts. A brief survey of the transcripts reveals a standard set of questions examining home and community life, encounters with persons of different races in their home communities, perceived changes in the interviewee's attitudes and their environs, etc. Communities include Richmond, KY; Berea, KY; Murray, KY and Alcoa, TN among others.[Description provided by Shannon Wilson, head of Special Collections & Archives.]
