The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories
International Association of Machinists Local 609 [New Haven, Conn.]Repository: Georgia State University. Library. Special Collections and Archives
Collection Description (CRHP): This Local 609, which represented workers at the U.S. Repeating Arms Company (formerly Olin-
Winchester) in New Haven, engaged in active union organizing and formed an close-knit community within the plant. With its records now housed at the Greater New Haven Labor History Association, the organization is now the subject of an oral history interview project conducted by volunteers. The oral histories will become part of this collection and are being recorded using DVDS. Eventually, these interviews will be transcribed and excerpts of the videos along with photographs will be available online. The union included African American members, and the interviews deal with racism and civil rights.
Access Copy Note: See collection description above. Local 609 records are held at the Southern Labor Archives at Georgia State University.
