The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories

Renee Garrelick oral history program

Repository: Concord Free Public Library. Special Collections

Collection Description (CRHP): This collection includes a 1999 oral history of Richard N. Goodwin, presidential speech writer for John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, who provides a very valuable perspective on the civil rights movement, the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, the Vietnam war, and the 1968 presidential campaign. The collection also includes an interview of Amedio 'Al' Armenti who addresses efforts in Massachusetts for civil rights. Another interview dealing with social activism is that of the 1982 interview with Dr. Dana McClean Greeley (long-time minister of the First Parish in Concord and the first president of the Unitarian Universalist Association) which deals partly with UU social activism.

Collection Description (Extant): The Renee Garrelick Oral History Program (also known as the Concord Oral History Program) consists of interviews with Concord citizens from all walks of life. Now in its 30th year, the program has resulted in the collected histories of more than three hundred Concord citizens. The interviews, which were conducted by Renee Garrelick, are recorded on audiocassette and were transcribed by Nancy McKinney. Photographer Alice Moulton's portraits also form an important part of the collection. There are over three hundred oral history transcripts available in Special Collections, most with accompanying audiocassettes and a photograph of the subject. Most of these oral histories are also included in the reference collection (please see the reference staff for more information.) Additional oral history collections, apart from the official Concord Oral History Program, are also available in Special Collections. [Accessed from web site on 20 August 2010]
