Walt Bodine collection

Repository: University of Missouri, Kansas City. Miller Nichols Library. Marr Sound Archives

Collection Description (CRHP): See especially WB.OR.115 (an interview with Robert Kennedy during the 1960 presidential campaign), and programs WB.OR.130 and WB.OR.133-135, which cover the 1968 Kansas City Riots (April 9-11) following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Among other conversations, Bodine speaks with Jackson County Sheriff Arvid Owsley, Kansas City Mayor Ilus Davis, Jackson County Prosecutor Joe Teasdale, and Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Fred "The Hammer" Williamson.

Collection Description (Extant): In 1940, [Walt Bodine] began his broadcasting career as an announcer and sportscaster for KDRO in Sedalia. After a stint with KVAK in Atchison, Kansas, Walt returned to Kansas City where he worked for KCKN, WDAF, WHB, and KMBZ. At WDAF, Walt hosted "Conversations," a popular talk show broadcast live from Bretton's Restaurant in downtown Kansas City. In the mid-1960s Walt switched to WHB, where he hosted "Night Beat," one of the nation's first call-in shows. [. . .] This collection consists primarily of audio cassettes and open reel tapes of Bodine's radio programs on KMBZ, WDAF, and KCUR. Notable programs in the collection are the coverage of the 1951 Kansas City flood and the 1957 Ruskin Heights tornado.
