The Civil Rights History Project: Survey of Collections and Repositories
[Shorefront oral history interviews]Repository: Shorefront
Collection Description (CRHP): Since 1995, Shorefront has collected community and personal histories from African American residents of 7 suburbs north of the City of Chicago along the lake shore. The non-profit organization holds approximately 50 hours of audio tape from approximately 30 individuals speaking on subjects that include early life and community atmosphere in Chicago and Evanston, schools, and career choices, as well as important issues, people, events, and institutions in their communities. Though not focused on Civil Rights Movement, many interviews discuss narrators' involvement in the struggle and speak to solutions and outcomes with regard to discrimination and racism. Shorefront continues to capture people via video and audio, and has recently initiated a podcast series.
