Repository description (extant): As a formal standing committee of Temple Israel, the general duties of the Archives Committee are, 'to collect, catalog, preserve, and manage the historical property of Temple Israel.' A dedicated all-volunteer group meets regularly to do just that.
The largest portion of the collection relates to Temple Israel and its members. Information comes from newspaper clippings, photographs, and personal contributions. This material is gathered, sorted, and protected by the volunteer staff. Files containing materials with information about Jewish members of other synagogues and their congregations, organizations, schools, and business are also included.
The Archives Committee also provides safekeeping for records belonging to the Jewish Historical Society of Memphis and the Mid-South.
