Repository description (extant): WHMC, a joint collection of the University of Missouri and the State Historical Society of Missouri, contains primary source materials for research and welcomes use by scholars, students, and the public. Our network allows for the full resources of the Collection -- the holdings of all four branches in Columbia, Kansas City, Rolla, and St. Louis -- to be available to researchers throughout the state of Missouri.
The Kansas City office opened on the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus in 1980 with a mission to collect, preserve, and make available for research, documents relating to the history and culture of Kansas City, western Missouri, and the Midwest. Housed with the University of Missouri-Kansas City's University Archives, the Kansas City offices have acquired more than 15,000 cubic feet of documents. These include a wide variety subjects and formats.
In addition to collecting and making available manuscripts of Missouri and the Midwest, the staff of WHMC-KC engages in other activities to promote history and the care of the historical record. The office also sponsors and otherwise supports educational and outreach projects including exhibits, publications, symposia, and workshops.
