Repository description (CRHP): The Missouri State Archives began an African American History Initiative in October 2001. The initiative aims to create a broad public awareness of the rich contributions of African Americans to the state, as well as offer new resources to historians and others studying Missouri's black history. Digital photograph and video collections and curriculum development are part of this effort; see a list at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/africanamerican/intro.asp.
One relevant presentation is a videotape and transcript of Reverend David K.reflecting on the Kansas City Riot of 1968.
Repository description (extant): Created by the legislature in 1965, the State Archives serves as the repository for state records of permanent historical value. Its holdings date from 1770 and include: executive, legislative, and judicial records; records of state departments and agencies; land records; military records; state publications; photographic collections; county and municipal records on microfilm; and manuscript and reference collections.
The Archives identifies, collects and preserves those records and makes them available to state government officials, historians, students, genealogists, and the general public. Currently, the Archives holds more than 336 million pages of paper; 400,000 photographs; 9,000 maps; 61,000 reels of microfilm, 560 cubic feet of published state documents and 1,000 audio/video items.
Repository Notes (CRHP): The "Progress Amidst Prejudice: Portraits of African Americans in Missouri, 1880-1920" curriculum unit is available online at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/education/aapc/intro.asp. It includes a link to the Archives' African American Portrait Database (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/mdh_splash/default.asp?coll=aa_portrait).
