Repository description (CRHP): The Wilson Library houses the Southern Historical Collection (SHC), a vast collection of distinct archival collections. These collections are comprised of unique primary documents, such as diaries, journals, letters, correspondence, photographs, maps, drawings, ledgers, oral histories, moving images, albums, scrapbooks, and literary manuscripts. There are several collections within the SHC that relate to civil rights and oral history including; the Southern Oral History Program Collection, Earlie E. Thorpe Oral History Collection, Bryan T. McNeil Oral History Collection, and the Taylor Branch Papers.
Repository description (extant): The Louis Round Wilson Library, located on Polk Place, is the home of the University Library Special Collections at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Manuscripts Department (including the Southern Historical Collection, the Southern Folklife Collection, and University Archives) and the North Carolina Collection (including the Research Library, Gallery, and Photographic Archives) provide rich primary resources, southern material, and North Caroliniana, in a variety of formats. The Rare Book Collection offers early manuscripts, printed books, and visual materials covering a wide range of human endeavor. The University Library's Digital Library, Documenting the American South, has its offices and digital publishing center here. The Special Collections Conservation Lab provides treatment for the Wilson Library collections. Each collection displays items from its holdings through a regular program of exhibitions.
