About this Item
Title
- [First day of issue envelope in honor of Walt Whitman dedicated to the memory of his friend and physician Alexander MacAlister, autographed by Paul R. MacAlister, 1940 Feb. 20]
Summary
- Flattened envelope, mounted and covered in plastic, shows a printed medallion with the busts of American poet Walt Whitman and Alexander MacAlister, facing right, above printed text. The first day of issue stamp for Feb. 20, 1940 in Camden, New Jersey cancels a five cent Walt Whitman postage stamp. Printed and hand written text on the top flap is signed by Paul R. MacAlister, son of the physician. Included is Whitman's facsimilie signature and a sample of his magenta sealing wax. Newspaper clippings on verso, from Feb. 18, 1940 tell the story of the creation of the artifact.
