About this Item
Title
- "Look here, your aims are both virtually the same! You want your children and he wants your children; let us cut them all three in half and settle it with the gentleman" / Louis Raemaekers.
Summary
- Single panel editorial cartoon shows President Woodrow Wilson intervening to prevent Europa (shown as a powerful young woman wielding a sword) from attacking Kaiser Wilhelm who is about to stab three children, labeled "Liberty," "Justice," and "Humanity." Raemaekers was a Dutch cartoonist, who, despite the fact that the Netherlands remained neutral during World War I, became famous for his anti-German cartoons. Here he alludes to the Biblical story of Solomon who proposed to settle a dispute between two women over a baby by cutting the baby in half. In 1916 and early 1917, President Wilson, tried to use his prestige to mediate the war. The effort failed, and the United States entered the war in 1917 on the side of the Allies.
