About this Item
Title
- [Secret Agent X-9]. A burnt offering. While X-9 is trapped in the oil-flooded cellar of the burning ranch house / Alex Raymond.
Summary
- Three-panel comic strip shows financier J.B. Marlowe being rescued by two federal agents. The three race to the Skull Ranch where they learn from two wounded men that Secret Agent X-9 has been left to die in the cellar of the burning ranch house. Meanwhile they realize that the master criminal known as "The Mask" has escaped in a plane. Secret Agent X-9 was a comic strip created by William Randolph Hearst's King Features Syndicate in 1934 to compete with the popular strip Dick Tracy. Dashiell Hammet (creator of Sam Spade and other popular fictional detectives) and Alex Raymond (creator of Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim) collaborated on the new strip for the first year. Agent X-9 was a curious mix of mysterious agent and private detective. The strip was continued with other writers and artists until 1996.
