Summary

  • Editorial cartoon shows Secretary of State Henry Kissinger holding a copy of The Final Days by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, an account of President Nixon's last days in office before he resigned over the Watergate Affair. Kissinger condemns the book as lacking in "compassion." Behind him stands an anguished figure holding a dead child labeled "1972 Hanoi Christmas Bombing." Marlette suggests that Kissinger, who was heavily involved in the decision to bomb Hanoi as the Vietnam War came to a close, is hypocritical. Marlette drew cartoons for the Charlotte Observer and other southern newspapers from 1972 until his death in 2007 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. He also drew the popular comic strip Kudzu.
