- - The cartoon refers to the political debate on the U.S. policy of nonintervention in the face of mounting casualties in Europe. In October of 1941 the U.S. destroyer Reuban James was torpedoed by a Nazi German submarine while on convoy duty off the coast of Iceland. The sinking of the vessel, the first American warship to fall as a result of German aggression, thus challenged the nonintervention policy and renewed the heated debate on whether or not the U.S. should enter the war. The cartoon, published on the day the Reuban James incident made headline news, opposes U.S. military intervention.
