- - The cartoon appeared on the editorial page of the New Orleans Item along with an editorial praising the nomination of then Solicitor General Stanley F. Reed, by President Franklin Roosevelt, for the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the retiring Justice George Sutherland. On January 17, a Senate Judiciary subcommittee overwhelmingly approved Reed's nomination and passed it on to the full Senate where it was unanimously approved on January 20th. Some observers feared that there would be significant Republican opposition to Reed's nomination, but his reputation of being only a moderate liberal, pacified most.
