Reed, by President Franklin Roosevelt, for the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the retiring Justice George Sutherland. On January 17, a Senate Judiciary subcommittee overwhelmingly approved Reed's nomination and passed it on to the full Senate where it was unanimously approved on January 20th. Some observers feared that there would be significant Republican opposition to Reed's nomination, but his reputation of being only a moderate liberal, pacified most.

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.
