- - In May of 1936, Life magazine began an eight part, monthly cartoon series by artist Gregor Duncan, about the upcoming presidential election. Duncan parodied Lewis Carroll's celebrated fairy tale Alice in Wonderland, using the character of Alice to represent the American public. The images appeared in conjunction with lengthy poems criticizing President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs and portraying his administration as wasteful and inefficient. Drawings six, seven, and eight of the series, are part of the Swann Collection. This drawing appeared with the poem "The New Deal Kitchen."
