- - Caption label from exhibit "Herblock Looks at 1972": A strong advocate for gun control, Herblock compared the lack of peace in Vietnam with gun deaths in the United States. It is not clear that the cartoonist reacted to any single shooting event, or the depressing tally of handgun murders in the United States. An increase in the homicide rate led to the Los Angeles Times to call for a ban on privately owned handguns shortly before Christmas in 1972.
