Summary

  • An aristocratic woman is forced to give up her newborn daughter to be raised by Gretchen, a peasant woman. The girl grows up with Lena, the peasant's real daughter, who tends a flock of geese. On her deathbed, the aristocratic mother decides her daughter should be reinstated into the royal household, and sends for her, but Gretchen substitutes Lena instead. Without success, the young goose girl is instructed in protocol and proper behavior. Soon Lena has had enough, and runs home to her mother, her geese, and her country suitor. Gretchen confesses, the rightful heir assumes her position, and Lena, the goose girl, happily returns to her old life.
