About this Item
Title
- Maybe you should have said it louder, chief
Summary
- World War II cartoon shows Hitler sitting despondently, holding a paper reading, "The German Army Is Invincible -- The Reich Can Never Be Bombed. A. Hitler." Behind him are three massive explosions labeled "Leningrad," "Libya," and "Blockbusters." German propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels tries to comfort Hitler, saying, "Maybe you should have said it louder, Chief." Hitler had assured the German people of victory, but by January 1943, the Germans had suffered a number of setbacks. In that month, the Russians broke the German blockade at Leningrad, the British retook Libya, and the Allies bombed Berlin for the first time in more than a year. Blockbuster was the popular name for the largest of the British bombs.
