  • World War II cartoon shows Vice President Henry Wallace, carrying a valise labeled "Good Will Ambassador," telling President Roosevelt goodbye, saying: "I'm taking a trip to Latin America, Chief. We need to promote better relations down there." The two men stand in front of the Capitol which is ripped with explosions labeled "Food Row, Size of Army, Post War Police Force, Farm Price Squabble, Absenteeism, and Tax Plan." In March 1943, Wallace traveled through South America trying to promote unity among the American republics in their defense of the hemisphere. Despite the need for a unified approach to the war effort at home, members of Congress continued to disagree over such matters as the proposed participation of the United States in a post war military force, the issue of absenteeism among critical industrial workers, the plan to forgive a year's income tax to facilitate withholding plans, and the issue of farm parity. Berryman suggests that a little good will is needed at home, as well.

Access to Originals

Please use the following steps to determine whether you need to fill out a call slip in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room to view the original item(s). In some cases, a surrogate (substitute image) is available, often in the form of a digital image, a copy print, or microfilm.

  1. Is the item digitized? (A thumbnail (small) image will be visible on the left.)

All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress.
