Notes
- - Caption label from exhibit "Collecting Memories": Reminders of home. Susan Barwary, a refugee of the Iraq War, brought her family's treasured coffee cups to the U.S., where she ultimately settled in Chicago. Her father purchased the cups originally a set of twelve in 1945. He was envisioning a large family, Barwary explains. Only five cups have survived. Barwary presented the five survivors to photographer Jim Lommasson. Between 2003 and 2014, Lommasson interviewed Iraq War refugees like Barwary and photographed the few possessions they were able to take with them. He compiled the photographs with handwritten testimony by the refugees into an album titled, What We Carried. "The participants' additions give voice to the universal plight of refugees throughout time," says Lommasson. "I hope viewers will imagine themselves making decisions about what they would gather before leaving their homes forever."
