Summary
- This booklet contains the instructions to priests given by Bishop Ioann Veniaminov (1797-1879) in 1841 when he reached the newly established Kamchatka Diocese. Veniaminov was one of the greatest Russian Orthodox missionaries to Alaska and the Russian Far East. He volunteered to go to Alaska in 1823 and settled with his family at Unalaska, where he built a church and school and began his lifelong task of studying the native languages of the region. After the death of his wife, in 1840 he became a monk and took the name Innokentii. He was then consecrated Bishop of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, and the Aleutians. These instructions were published in 1880 in memory of Innokentii, who had died the previous year. He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1977. The instructions were excerpted from reports of the Irkutsk Theological Seminary published in 1879. The booklet is preserved in the collections of the National Library of Russia and was digitized for the Meeting of Frontiers digital library project in the early 2000s. World Digital Library.
