Summary

  • This dataset is an export of transcriptions for 4,656 images from the "the crystal : a record of visions and conferences with the in-dwellers of the spirit world” created by volunteers participating in the Library of Congress crowdsourcing program By the People (https://crowd.loc.gov) campaign Seers, Spiritualists, and the Spirit World: The experiments of Frederick Hockley. It contains text created by volunteers through a transcription and review process, volunteer-created tags, digital collections metadata, and metadata representing the arrangement of the items in the By the People platform, Concordia.
  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign Seers, Spiritualists, and the Spirit World: The experiments of Frederick Hockley (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/hockley/). The campaign consisted of all then-available online images of digitized content from "The crystal" transcribed in their entirety. These 11 notebooks (https://lccn.loc.gov/2010414646) are volumes 4-5 and 7-15 of The Crystal, 19th century occult revivalist Frederick Hockley's manuscript records of his crystal and mirror-gazing experiments. Acquired by the Library of Congress as part of Harry Houdini's Library, the volumes record information about the "spirit world" as told to Hockley by his seer, typically a young woman, whom he called the "Crowned Angel" (one such was Emma Louisa Leigh, ca. 1838-1858). The By the People campaign includes other additional context for the volumes.
  • This dataset includes: 2020449268.zip - a zip file containing a CSV file and a README file -- hockley_2023-03-07.csv - a .CSV containing campaign, project, item, itemID, asset, and asset status metadata, as well as an image URL, the volunteer-created transcriptions, and volunteer-created tags. This .CSV is the direct export of the Seers, Spiritualists, and the Spirit World: The experiments of Frederick Hockley campaign.
