  • The dataset includes transcriptions and data generated from the pages in the By the People campaign We the Undersigned: Black South Carolinians Petition for Equal Rights, 1865 (https://crowd.loc.gov/campaigns/undersigned/). Morrill Papers (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/collmss.ms000122), which was transcribed in its entirety. The petition extends fifty-four feet in length and contains the names of 3,740 African American residents of South Carolina urging the U.S. Congress to ensure voting rights would be secured to them in a new South Carolina state constitution. See the Justin S. Morrill Papers finding aid (https://hdl.loc.gov/loc.mss/eadmss.ms009307) for additional context about Morrill and his collection.
