About this Item
Title
- Harold Garcia interview conducted by Jaime Lopez, 2017-05-17.
Summary
- Harold "Harry" Garcia, an A-Journeyman Inside Wireman, was born in 1961 in NYC, the son of Puerto Rican parents, and grew up in Electchester, IBEW Local 3's community co-operative in Queens that was built, and is owned and maintained by the union and its members. He describes Electchester and credits the leadership of Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., as enabling working people-including people of color--to get ahead at a time when "the labor movement was in lockstep with the philosophical arguments of the civil rights movement," and making material and tangible gains through wages, benefits, collective bargaining. Reflecting his creative side as well as his technological expertise--(he is a musician when not working)--he discusses his long-held position as Technical Director and Lead Video Systems Integrator at Citifield, where he is in charge of the staff and technical operations of the scoreboard control room. He also oversees productions at Manhattan's Jacob Javits Center. His experiences span the analog world and today's complex digital world. Despite technological changes, he predicts a "robust future" for the electrical industry. He also foresees that Labor will have to push back hard--once again--to "implant a philosophical premise as to what American workers are about and who American corporations need to hold in a higher regard..."
